Discrimination And Stuttering

Stuttering is a childhood problem faced by many people in the United States. There is no clear indication why people develop a stutter when they talk, and some scientists believe that it could be a mental problem or a block absent speech. Some experts believe that speech therapy helps to improve the condition, but several people who stutter have a difficult time leading a normal life.

Communication is the biggest tool that mankind has, and people with a stuttering problem have a major communication problem. Because they cannot communicate thoroughly, these people face difficulties in school and also while getting a job. However, people who stutter can work in an organization in job roles that do not involve any communication. Stuttering has no bearing on person’s intelligence or the physical ability to perform a job. Several employers see stuttering as a major drawback and discriminate the people with such problems.

Even stuttering is recognized as a disability by the American Disability Act and the law prohibits from them being discriminated. However, people who stutter see it as an uphill thing when it comes to seeking jobs. People should understand that a person who stutters is otherwise normal and has no other problems. Not only do such people find it difficult to lead a normal life but they develop a lot of problems on the emotional front and suffer from low confidence and inferiority complex. They suffer the differential treatment given by the society through out their lives and they become introverts by nature. Not bale to communicate is a big emotional blow for any person.
