Even if someone suffered from a disability in the past, they are covered under the act. The act, however, does not specify a full list of the impairments, but mental disorder is one of the specified things. Even depression is a kind of mental disorder and is covered by the Disability Act. There are several types of mental conditions that qualify for the Discrimination Act and Disability Act like:
- Dementia
- Depression
- Bipolar disorder
- Obsessive compulsive disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Self-harm
These are only some of the disorders mentioned in the act and there age several more. This act was mainly passed to end discrimination that is meted out to people who have mental or physical limitations. It gives them an opportunity to lead normal lives just like anybody else and have access to all the conveniences that other people enjoy. For instance, a student who has a personality disorder cannot be denied admission into school or college. However, the institution may only stress upon the student to receive valid medical treatment. An institution cannot assume that the person with the mental disorder will be disruptive and if they are allowed to live normally in the society, then they are allowed access to all other facilities.
