What Is Overt Discrimination ?

There are different levels in discrimination itself. Discrimination is the act of giving a differential treatment to a person based on gender, race, and color, and disability, physical or mental condition in the society. This kind of treatment does not come from neighbors alone, but also from people who have the influence like employers and other organizations as well.

There are subtle form of discrimination and also overt type of discrimination. Several sociology experts agree that the overt type of discrimination is more boldly accepted in the society but not the subtle discrimination. In an overt type of discrimination, the act is blatant and is meted out to certain section of the society itself. It is not in a subtle in nature at all. People feel more hurt and singled out in this kind of discrimination.

People tend to fight an overt type of discrimination with public cooperation, but not the subtle kind of discrimination. In subtle discrimination, the overtures are very mild yet hurting. It is done as though that one single person is being singled out. Not everyone is capable of handling this kind of discriminating act. Racist remarks and insulting statements or hypocrisy is common in the society but if only one person feels it all the time then they could be more degraded. They may get depressed and have difficulty expressing themselves. Discrimination is not allowed in the society and there are laws under the civil rights act protecting the minority and other discriminated people. Also, there is a rule that people who have been discriminated will discriminate themselves.
