What Is Equal Pay Act ?

Equal Pay Act was a law that was passed in the year 1970 to ban discrimination when it came to pay scales and wages. If men and women share equal amount of responsibilities in their work and hold similar positions, then they also should be paid equally. Previously the gender bias was very prevalent in office environment, and men were considered the head of the household and the person with more financial responsibilities.

However, in today’s world women come from various backgrounds like some stay unmarried and many women are divorced with children and are shouldering the entire responsibility for running the household. In such cases, even women deserve better pays. Because they have to run the expenses in the same way that a man has to and meet similar expenses and bills getting an equal pay scale is their right.

Ever since historic times women have been underpaid than men no matter what job role they undertake. It is only after the equal employment opportunity came into effect that gender discrimination was noticed and the government decided to put an end to it. The Equal Pay Act clearly specifies that the depressed wages will decrease the living standards for the employees and wage differences based on sex would discourage the discriminated sex from seeking employment. Also, such gender bias will prevent the employers from making maximum use of the available work force. It also causes labor disputes and obstructs the economic growth of the country. It also creates an unfair working environment for men and women.
