Management For Arson Prevention And Control
Arson or vandalism always has a devastating effect on the owner be it a home or business. Most of these attacks are planned in the nights or during weekends. This timing makes it difficult to deter the crimes as well. |
The precautions undertaken to keep burglars at bay also works well to keep vandals and arsonists away. Some such, measures are:
Improve State of General Security:
All employees should be trained well to keep doors, windows and skylights especially those leading to alleys secured. They should be trained to use the alarm systems when required. The landscaping around the premise should not offer hiding or camouflaged place to criminals. All the windows should be such that they are clearly visible from the parking lot and street. The entire property should be well lit during the nights. The employees should be trained periodically to report any suspicious action around and be careful of lurking strangers. When the owner is required to move out of town, the neighbors should be requested to keep watch on the property.
Add on Fire Prevention:
Safety equipment like automatic and tamper proof sprinkler and smoke detectors should be installed. The batteries of smoke detectors should be checked periodically and replaced when necessary. The surrounding space should be free of litters which are fuel sources like newspapers, left-over paint, trimmings of landscapes or old rags. All the storage spaces and other less visited areas should be secured. All the flammable materials should be placed in fire resistant cabinets. If such material is not required, it should be disposed correctly. People occupying the space should be familiarized with emergency plans and ways to prevent arson. Patrols should check the fire prevention plans regularly.
Arson is best prevented when government agencies work together with business owners and citizens. Employees’ education should be such that any information useful in investigation of arson fires should be provided without hesitation. All citizens should be made aware of making their property unavailable to probable arsonists.
Arson prevention can be undertaken by familiarizing with the arson risk in the area by studying trends of previous crimes. Participation in ensuring arson prevention by watch programs, reporting signs of suspicious activities, and watching abandoned buildings for forced entry should be complied. Abandoned vehicles which are easy targets for arsonists should be reported.
Local legislation should be coerced to ensure that owners of unused property are more responsible. Cleanliness, proper storage of flammable materials and storing gasoline in garages or sheds should be encouraged.
