List Of Countries That Have Capital Punishment
Capital punishments ranged from stoning to crucifixion, shooting by firing squads, electrocution, asphyxiation with gas, injecting lethal drug, beheading, or hanging. These have all been evolved over many years of human existence by systems meant for guarding justice. In the US, capital punishment is implemented by injecting lethal drugs which will stop the heartbeat or breathing of the accused. |
Many countries like Australia, Canada and most Latin American and European countries no longer have capital punishment. But there are still many Asian and African countries and the US that award this punishment when deemed fit.
Capital punishment is spoken about controversially since 18th century since many believe that it implies getting back to barbarism and since it has little effect in reducing the recurrence of crimes. This is not regarded fit in modern society and capital punishment for heinous crimes is recommended to be limited to life imprisonment. While some argue that capital punishment deters repetition of serious crimes, others feel that it causes unnecessary death of innocent individuals who were falsely implicated.
Capital punishment has been a part of justice systems from yesteryears. The earliest written law is dated back to 1750 BC in Babylonian code of Hammurabi in which 25 crimes were listed with this punishment.
In the 5th century many were hung or beheaded in Europe for crimes done against the church or state. In the Middle Ages, maiming and disfigurement of the accused was opted in place of death. During the French revolution, 4,000 deaths were executed by the revolutionaries. In the UK, capital punishment was awarded to approximately 250 crimes. By the nineteenth century, capital punishment was slowly replaced by incarceration for long times in prisons. By 1969, the UK completely abolished capital punishments.
It was Portugal, which was the first country to do away with capital punishment. This occurred in 1867. Soon, by the twentieth century, many European countries did the same. Canada abolished this punishment in 1976 and by 2000; most of Europe no longer has death penalty.
In the US, several states abolished capital punishments in the mid-20th century. By early 70s, the US Supreme Court stopped executions stating that the punishment was levied in an erratic and biased manner which made the punishment appear unusual and cruel. Execution was regarded as an ill-conceived practice which was in complete violation of the Amendments 8 and 14 of the constitution. The capital punishment was not completely abolished but limited against certain crimes and fairer standards were being recommended for its implementation. Many states brought out new laws in compliance with this argument.
