Just as in the case of any other technology, computers are prone to risk of misuse for personal gains. Computer and cyber crimes are on the rise across the globe, with instances of data theft, computer hacking, and other similar crimes are growing popular.

Data alteration is a crime which has been constantly affecting majority of the people today. Apart from data theft and computer hacking, unauthorized access, interruptions and counterfeiting of data is becoming quite common these days. Data may be altered for various reasons -- either for gaining access to confidential information, or for the purpose of forgery. Personal information, especially relating to financial matters such as the credit card code, bank account number, etc can be stolen. The information so obtained can be altered, misused, or conveniently sold for personal gain.

There is a need to curb the growing computer crimes. Stringent punishments must be laid out for offenders involved in computer and cyber crimes, so that the public does not take these crimes lightly. For this very purpose, computer laws have also been enforced, which have been helpful in protecting and preserving the confidentiality and authenticity of the personal data of individuals and preventing it from being misused. To avoid misuse and alteration of data by offenders, it is essential to keep the entire data and passwords protected through restricted access. Only then, data can be genuinely protected.
