There are different types of family violence that include physical injury, emotional neglect, abuse and sexual assault on spouses, children, elders, siblings and even on parents. Individual and societal consequences occurring as a result of family violence can be severe. Some of these consequences include:
- Physical injury that can result in a permanent disability or death
- Development of chronic health conditions have been observed in elders who have been abused or neglected. Some of these conditions include migraine headaches, arthritis, chronic neck, heart attacks and strokes.
- Children, who either have witnessed or became victims of family violence, tend to suffer with cognitive and developmental errors that include low self-esteem, lack of self-respect, aggressions, PTSD, mental illness and other feelings such as fear, anxiety, grief and depression.
- Average expenditure on health care tends to increase due to increased incidents of family violence. For example, the US spends more than $5.8 billion every year towards treatment of victims of rape, physical assault, stalking, and homicide that have occurred due to intimate partners.
- Emotional disturbances occur in both adults and children as a result of family violence.
In order to overcome these consequences of family violence, efforts must come from all sides. Some important measures that can be taken include:
- Providing protection and immediate assistance to victims
- Creating public awareness campaigns explaining consequences of family violence
