There are different forms of family violence. Some of those are listed below.
Spouse maltreatment: This type of family violence occurs when one partner tries to gain control and power over other by means of physical, sexual and emotional/psychological abuse. This is the most common type of family violence that occurs between married as well as cohabiting partners. Women are the most common victims in this type of violence while men are the perpetrators.
Child abuse and neglect: Any act like inflicting physical or mental injury, sexual abuse and exploitation and negligent behavior by a person towards a child is treated as child abuse and neglect.
Sibling maltreatment: In this type of abuse, siblings resort to unwanted aggressive behavior and violence against one another primarily due to prejudice.
Parental abuse: In this type of abuse, parents are physically and emotionally assaulted by their children.
Abuse and neglect of elderly people: This type of abuse occurs when elders are treated improperly or neglected in their homes by their adult children or other relatives. These types of family violence often go undetected as many elders prefer to keep silent and are reluctant to tell anyone since elders are physically and financially not capable enough to move away from the place of violence. Elder abuse can be either physical, psychological, material exploitation or violation of rights.
