Other reasons of outrageous criminal behavior among juveniles are poverty, improper relationships among family members and inability of the child to cope up with peer pressure. Even the violence portrayed in mass media can have a serious negative impact on the behavior of certain types of children leading to an increase in juvenile delinquency.
Delinquency can be referred to as a deviation from a morally correct path. Delinquency and subsequent life after delinquency can have a tremendous influence over the behavior of a child. Delinquency can lead to the degeneration of the child’s personality and his/her sense of self-esteem and self-belief.
Rate of juvenile delinquency depends on the way the problem is solved. Governments should initiate appropriate programs towards prevention of juvenile delinquency so that teenagers reduce the tendency to get involved in criminal and other antisocial activities. Prevention services can include activities such as parental counseling and education, youth sheltering and monitoring, imparting appropriate educational programs, providing educational support and rehabilitation. Involvement of youth in delinquent activities can be discouraged by adopting professional development programs that provide professional training and education and create better job opportunities, thereby helping in improving the economic situation. It is necessary to develop social and cognitive skills among troubled youth so as to avoid conflict and control aggression.
A wide range of recreational facilities and other youth development activities also help in avoiding delinquent activities among youth. At a community level, it is important to create public awareness among people regarding the causes and risks of juvenile delinquency. Increased representation of youth in community-based development programs and social services can help in converting teenagers into socially responsible individuals and better citizens.
