What Is Overtime Pay ?

Overtime pay is the extra pay that has to be given by the employer for working extra hours. The usual time required for an employer is 40 hours a week. If an employee puts in more than 40 hours of work in a week, then they are eligible to receive overtime for their work.

The overtime pay that has been defined by the United States Department of Labor is one and half times the regular pay. Also, the overtime should be equivalent to the same number of hours the employee puts into work on any given day during the regular work week.

If an employee earns $20 dollars a week, then they should get an overtime of $30 if the working hours exceed 40 hours within the same week. In some states, the Municipal or the State law may have even allowed more than the federal standard of one and half times the pay.

A work week as per the definition of US labor laws is 7 days of work. Also, the work week is not considered to be the standard 8 am to 5 pm schedule. A person's work timings can start at any time and end at any time. The work hours are individual requirements, and people in the same company may even have different hours. Also, the Federal requirement is that the employer should pay the overtime along with the salary. If the employee gets paid every Friday, then the overtime should also be paid on that day for that respective week. It is similar in the case of monthly pay.
