Nearly 11.4 million people lost their jobs, and are now taking unemployment benefits compensation. The government spends an amount of ten billion dollars every month on unemployment benefits. More than 5 million people have been receiving these benefits for a period of six months now. Some workers have collected payments for nearly ninety-nine weeks, which is the longest period that the Department of Labor has paid unemployment benefits.
The standard period mentioned by the Department of Labor on their website in several states is 26 weeks. However, President Obama has a reconsidered and it may be extended to 52 weeks until the economy picks up. However, if a person does not find a job within the 26 week window, then Department of Labor reviews the case. During this time if the person appeals for the unemployment benefit, then he or she may be considered for additional benefits. The additional benefits may be extended for another 26 weeks or lesser than that.
This year the unemployment is nearly 9.7 percent and has decreased by a mere 0.3 percent compared to 2009. Real estate, construction, finance and manufacturing services have taken the brunt of recession directly. People who worked in these sectors have been badly hit. Several experts believe that these jobs may not actually recover even if the economy recovers.
