How Long Can You Receive Unemployment Benefits ?

Unemployment benefits are a type of insurance that is funded by the employer as a federal requirement every year. This benefit is given to all employees who have been laid off as a result of job cuts, severance and also transfer of services to another country. If the employee is not at fault for losing their job, then they are eligible for receiving an unemployment benefit authorized by the United States Department of Labor.

If a person has been notified by their company that he or she will be fired within a month or so, then the employee can immediately start the application process for unemployment benefits so that they receive a salary the following month in spite of their job loss.

Any person who has been employed for more than 12 months and lost their job after that is eligible for unemployment benefits. The unemployment benefit is provided by the State unemployment insurance program, and this is actually funded by the employer.

The usual time period for receiving unemployment benefit is 26 weeks. However, under President Obama’s government, this rule is being reviewed and the standard period may be extended to 52 weeks. The rate of unemployment is still at 9.07 percent, which is quite high and damaging for the economy. In order to pump funds back into the economy, the time period for receiving the benefits may well be extended. However, once this standard period for receiving the benefits is over, and if the employee re-appeals for benefits, then he or she may get just additional benefits.
