Unfortunately, how long will your receive your benefits is a very difficult question to answer. The standard time period is 26 weeks, but beyond that there will be several factors taken into consideration in order to extend the period to receive the benefits. The size of your benefit and the duration you have been drawing your payments will be reviewed by the Department of Labor.
There are two factors for calculating your benefits. One is the benefit year or the year where the recepient started receiving the benefits. The other is the base period, while is the actual time period for which the recipient has been receiving the benefit payments. It is the benefit year that is taken into account when determining the amount a person earned during that year and that is what is paid to you in the base period.
The amount of benefit widely differs from one state to the next. There are two or three standard methods that are used to compute the benefit payments. Most states have a standard duration for receiving the benefits. However some states differ, like if you are a resident of Montana, then the payment will be made for a maximum period of 28 weeks, in Massachusetts it is 30, and in most other states it is 26. One quarter of the wages you earn in the base period is given as your benefits. So, as a rule a person will receive unemployment benefits worth 23 weeks only.
