Unemployment benefits are given to people who have been laid off or terminated by the company for no fault of theirs. Due to the current economy, several people have been terminated or laid off. The automobile industry has crashed, several manufacturing units have gone out of business in various sectors, the real estate market crashed, and even the marketing industry has suffered a lot.

Since many companies have been closing shop, thousands of people who worked in these companies are now jobless. They are the ones who should be looking to apply for unemployment benefits. Experts also believe that these industries may never be restored to their usual self even if the economy improved.

However, not many laid off employees know how long they can receive these benefits before the checks stop coming. In most states, the ceiling for receiving these benefits would be 26 weeks. This is mentioned on the US Labor Department website. Only in Massachusetts, the unemployed can receive benefits up to 30 weeks and in Montana up to 28 weeks. If a person has been unable to find a job within this time period, they may request an extension. Depending on the size of the benefit, the application for extension is reviewed. The unemployed may get an extension of another 13 weeks from the date of reapplication. There are chances that the government may extend the minimum time period to 52 weeks so that people stop applying for extensions and also the economy may get more stabilized if the government takes this step.
