How Long Can I Collect Unemployment ?

The United States unemployment benefit is an insurance plan offered by the Federal Employment Office or the Department of Labor. All employers are required to contribute towards this insurance so that it can take care of employees who have been fired. This program has especially been sponsored for people who have been fired for no fault of theirs.

In order to be able to claim this benefit, the person has to meet some predetermined criteria. They should be in a physical condition to work. They should be looking for work and should find a job within a period of six months. They should be able to change their profile and look for any job they can do. The person is eligible to get the same amount of salary they were earning as an unemployment benefit for a period of six months at least. If the person continues to file for it, then the decision to pay the benefit will be reviewed by the Department of Labor. These requirements also vary from state to state.

Another condition to be met is that the employee should have been working for at least 12 to 15 months before filing for unemployment benefits.

In most States, a maximum allowance for 26 weeks of unemployment benefit is given for the employees. It is either given in a weekly payment or on a monthly basis. In case you have been genuinely trying for jobs and have not been able to find one before the unemployment benefit period expires, then you may be considered for some additional benefits.
