Unemployment benefits can be given up to a maximum of 26 weeks and in the mean time the person claiming the benefit is supposed to find another job. The unemployment benefit is a kind of insurance that is paid by the State to cover the needs of the unemployed person during the period he or she is without employment. It is not a charity organization and there are rules associated with the benefits. It is a federal requirement that all employers contribute towards the unemployment benefit insurance.
Also, there are rules to qualify for unemployment benefit.
- In order to claim the benefit, a person should have worked for at least 12 to 15 months prior to filing.
- They should be physically fit for working.
- A retired person and or a person who has voluntarily resigned from their job are not eligible to claim unemployment benefit.
- A person, who has been unemployed, should have proof of firing or a valid proof of subsequent reduction of the number of hours of work.
- They should be prepared to accept any kind of work that is suitable to their profile.
The maximum amount of time a person can expect to receive the benefits is 26 weeks. Within this period they are expected to find a job.
In case a person is unable to find employment despite efforts, they may be eligible for additional benefits.
