Who Qualifies For Unemployment ?

All people, who have been employed but lost their jobs because their employer fired them for no fault of theirs, are eligible for unemployment benefits. However, there are some basic criteria that have to be fulfilled in order to claim these benefits.

Unemployment benefits can be given up to a maximum of 26 weeks and in the mean time the person claiming the benefit is supposed to find another job. The unemployment benefit is a kind of insurance that is paid by the State to cover the needs of the unemployed person during the period he or she is without employment. It is not a charity organization and there are rules associated with the benefits. It is a federal requirement that all employers contribute towards the unemployment benefit insurance.

Also, there are rules to qualify for unemployment benefit.

  • In order to claim the benefit, a person should have worked for at least 12 to 15 months prior to filing.
  • They should be physically fit for working.
  • A retired person and or a person who has voluntarily resigned from their job are not eligible to claim unemployment benefit.
  • A person, who has been unemployed, should have proof of firing or a valid proof of subsequent reduction of the number of hours of work.
  • They should be prepared to accept any kind of work that is suitable to their profile.

The maximum amount of time a person can expect to receive the benefits is 26 weeks. Within this period they are expected to find a job.

In case a person is unable to find employment despite efforts, they may be eligible for additional benefits.
