What Is A Child Abuse ?
Children are said to be innocent gifts from God. For many years, in the initial phase of their lives, they are dependent upon the elders around them for survival. Exploitation of this authority or control could result in child abuse. In a broad spectrum, child abuse is referred to as an act of mistreatment or neglect of a child. |
There are various forms of child abuse. Physical abuse is one such category of child abuse that symbolizes imposing physical harm on the child in the form of shaking, choking, biting, kicking, burning, rough handling during the administration of daily living activities like bathing or dressing, and using restraint and/or force to cause harm to the child.
Sexual abuse forms the next category of child abuse. This type of abuse not only causes physical harm but has an adverse implication on the child’s mental state. Actions of child sexual abuse include touching and kissing the breasts of a child or his or her genitals, asking the child to touch another person in a sexual manner, indulging in sex with a child, and/or using force to get the child into pornography or prostitution.
A child can be abused emotionally as well. Such an abuse leads to reduced self esteem and leaves its traces in the future years of life also. Acts of emotional abuse are isolating the child from others, making use of the child, instilling fear into the child through intimidation or anger and asking the child to do unreasonable things. Not being able to provide a minor with basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothing and emotional support fall under the category of neglect. Examples of this form of abuse include failure in making a child feel loved, wanted, safe and worthy; not taking care of their medical and personal needs; denying education, leaving a child often without adult supervision and not protecting the child from any risk or harm.
Other variants of child abuse involve witnessing woman abuse and ritual abuse.
