Domestic Violence In Women With Depression
According to researchers from the University of Melbourne, women who are depressed have higher chances of being subjected to domestic violence and abuse. This is the first study of its kind that has been able to find the link between domestic abuse and depression. |
In fact, researchers claim that one of the main reasons for depression to set in among abused people is the abuse itself. This stays constant even after various other parameters such as socio-economic status, demographics and health is taken into consideration.
For the research, the researchers checked association between depressed women and domestic abuse. The women were categorized as being depressed most probably and not being depressed and each one had incidences of domestic violence and/or had faced abuse as a child. In the course of the study, the researchers found that around one-third of the women had been abused by their partner as some point or the other; and nearly a quarter of the women had been abused in the last 12 months by their partners.
The researchers found that women who were categorized as being most probably depressed had a higher chance of suffering from domestic violence compared to women who were not suffering from depression. This violence could be physical, emotional or even sexual. In fact, researchers claim the depressed women are 6 to 7 times more likely to suffer from severe domestic violence.
This research brings out the importance of taking domestic violence in women with depression into consideration when therapists and psychiatrists are treating these women for depression.
