What Is Domestic Violence ?

Domestic violence is the kind of violence that involves people belonging to the same family or even the same household, and it involves physical harm, or sexual attack. The definition of family or household includes former spouses, current spouse, elders like parents, husband, wife, and people who are related by blood to either of the spouses.

Family fights take place by and large in the United States, but it should not get to the point of physical violence or emotional harassment of a person. Even psychological abuse is not acceptable and is considered as a form of domestic violence. If one of the spouses is constantly being put through psychological abuse in the form of emotional harassment, sexual harassment and demeaning behavior, it is considered to be all part and parcel of domestic violence.

The Domestic Violence Act which is a part of Marriage and Divorce Act is payable or punishable crime according to the United States court of law. Excessive domination of one spouse that leads to a less equal relationship is also considered as domestic violence by the court of law. Marriage is an equal partnership and is all about equality. If one so the spouses is getting constantly dominated, then it is a violent relationship where the other person is put through constant submission. Sometimes other family members also contribute to domestic violence in their own way and cause marital disharmony among couples. Even the children are an integral part of domestic violence and are often the silent sufferers. They go through immense emotional distress in an abusive relationship.
