Myth Of The Successful Child Support

There is a misconception that child support is very successful and ensures that the child gets what is due to hi. Unfortunately, this is nothing but a myth of successful child support. There seems to be a close link between incarceration in prison and the myth of successful child support.

There is no doubt that the crime rate in America is on the rise. The number of prisoners being incarcerated each year keeps increasing. According to a report by The Associated Press published in 2006, it was reported that one in every 32 American adults were behind bars, on parole or on probation.

Although incarceration rate keeps increasing in America year on year, there is a reason for this phenomenon to happen. Crime is one reason but there is a bigger reason why incarceration rate is so high. The main reason is child support enforcement. This is affecting millions of families across the country and is instrumental in shattering the myth of successful child support. Child support enforcement is affecting millions of child, unjustly incarcerated parents and families.

This harmful effect is clearly visible from a study conducted on factors affecting successful reintegration of ex-prisoners in Baltimore. Most ex-prisoners said during the study that the success or failure for successful reintegration into society was dependant on finances. When the study was conducted, 62 percent of ex-prisoners said that they were in debt because of child support and other fees that were imposed by the court. As a result this created a lot of obstacles in their way when they tried to become financially independent.

The ex-prisoners cannot fulfill the demands of child support while they are in jail. As a result the prisoners are again put back into prison because they are unable to pay child support. How can men support themselves and their families if child support policies are imposed on them? The problem lies in the fact that these men will keep going to prison because they cannot pay child support and they will continue to fall behind in the payment. This is the myth of successful child support.
