First State To Allow Same Sex Marriages
Gay relationships and marriages have been a big subject of controversy for the church and the society as well ever since it was legalized in the United States. Massachusetts was the first state to legalize gay marriages and soon after it found several couples coming to the state and getting married. It was a highly controversial and contentious decision that the state made. |
When the highest court in the state allows the same sex marriage, it means that homosexuals can enjoy all the marriage rights that straight couples have. They not only can get married and hold a marriage certificate, but they also can have the same rights through divorce.
The Massachusetts court decided to keep the court open on a Sunday after legalizing gay marriage, and surprisingly they found hundreds of applications and marriages take place the same night. It went ion until the early hours in the morning. Hams and Shepherd were the first gay couple to get married in the court of Massachusetts.
However, even today the Church vehemently opposes gay marriages, whether it is for men or women. It believes that such marriages are against nature as marriages are meant to be between man and woman and not between members of the same gender.
The gay marriage issue also became a cause for the presidential elections. The president was required to make a speech even on such an issue as it was of equal social importance. Homosexuals have been trying to get the respect they deserve in the society and that could only happen if they legalized their status. It also makes other aspects like child adoption easier for them. Today, more and more homosexuals have their relationship in the open.
