In past few decades, the number of immigrants to the US has grown significantly, and a large number of immigrants are undocumented and staying illegally in the country. |
This has become a problem for the American government and is in confusion whether to accept the immigrants or to deport them back to their nations. These immigrants are large in numbers and pay regularly taxes and social security that contributed greatly to the economy. A process of naturalization is introduced to award citizenship to these immigrants of various nationalities by simply fulfilling the Nationality Act and Immigration Bonds.
Statistics for the year 2005 show that the country received the maximum number of applications from Mexican immigrants for naturalization estimating about 77,089 citizens in the US. Following the Mexicans, the Filipinos were the next with a population of 36,671 and among others were the Indians with 35,962, Vietnamese in 32,296 numbers and finally China with 31,708 applicants. There were immigrants from other nations like Montenegro, which constitute a very small number. Places like Florida, New York and California has seen the largest number of naturalized citizens and more people are in queue for becoming citizens.
The basic reason behind this naturalization in these states is not confirmed but a few reasons like the foreign exchange trading business, cheap hotels in Atlantic City and low-priced auto insurance in these states may be the reason. The requirements for naturalization includes some criteria’s like the immigrant should be minimum eighteen years of age, not involved in unlawful activities in the country of permanent residence and must have resided in the US for a minimum of 5 years. These formalities when completed the immigrant can be awarded with citizenship.
