Requirements For US Citizenship
There are different procedures involved in becoming a US citizen. In case you are a non-resident of U.S and looking forward to become a citizen you will have to go through the naturalization process. The process involves basic needs and requirements that you need to fulfill before getting citizenship. |
Firstly, you must be 18 or above so that you can fill Form N-400. This form is the most important one in case you are looking forward for US citizenship. Now those under 18 can fill in Form N-600. Once your parents turn to get the citizenship, you will automatically receive one. The basic requirements would be having a Green Card and residing in the US for a minimum of 4.9 yrs. The time is calculated according to the number of years you have managed to stay in US after receiving the Green Card. You can also apply if you have married a US citizen and have resided in U.S for a good 2.9yrs.
Now you can apply for the naturalization process if you have successfully stayed in US for a good 5 years without leaving the nation for a year. You need to continuously be present in US for 30 months consecutively, or have never left the US for more than 6 months due to any overseas trip.
Also, your character should seem as if you are a very good individual. You must pay your taxes on time without any kind of delay. If you have been caught in case of murder or attempt to murder, you will be rejected completely. The individual cannot be convicted for a serious of crime. The individual cannot commit any kind of crime, which involves carrying drugs. He ore she should not be caught for gambling, smuggling, drinking excessively, practicing polygamy and such other as stated by the USCIS.
Lastly, most important, he or she should be able to speak, read and write and can understand the rights and duties of the US laws and principles. There are certain exceptions to this rule and you can go through the guidelines carefully.
