My Rights As A Tenant

All tenants have rights and as a tenant you should educate yourself on these rights. These rights are called renter's rights and are intended to protect tenants from unfair practices of landlords. However, every city in the US has different set of rights for tenants, it would be in your best interests to learn as much as possible about them. This is true for a person renting a property and for the landlord.

There are number of things that fall under the rights of a tenant, like how security deposit a landlord can ask and whether the landlord is following the correct procedure for evicting a tenant. There are many non-governmental organizations that help to educate people on tenant's rights and often work with tenants and landlords when there is a dispute. These organizations also check rental agreements, and help tenants find a lawyer or any other legal issues they may have about the rental property. (See Reference 1)

In places where rental properties are scarce and more people are looking to rent homes and apartments, it is common to see the abuse of tenant's rights. The reason for this is simple as landlords know that they can find another person to rent the place without any delay. In such places, it is common for landlords to ask exorbitant amounts as security deposits or not following the correct procedure when asking a tenant to vacate the premises. This is definitely frightening for tenants and that is why all tenants should make an effort to learn about their rights as a tenant. (See Reference 1)

Things that fall under the purview of rights of a tenant include lease agreement, proper health and safety measures, rent control, following the proper procedure for terminating a rental agreement, proper system to handle complaints made by a tenant, proper access for physically challenged tenants, personal rights of a tenant, and the status of pets in a rental property. (See Reference 1)
