A strategic plan will help your donors and funders know that their money and gifts are being put to good use. A strategic plan is nothing but decisions and actions that show what an organization does, why it does it and how it envisages itself few years down the line because its actions. A strategic plan will help your non-profit organization to stay focused on crucial and important issues associated with the organization. If your non-profit organization follows the laid out strategic plan, it will improve its performance and in the bargain its results.

The process of strategic planning for non-profit organizations usually starts with a review of the mission statement. This will help you concentrate on why the organization was created and what activities it should indulge in or is indulging in. If necessary, changes can be made to the mission statement.

You need to have formal mandates in order to receive funding from authorized funding groups. If you do not have mandates you will most probably not receive any funding. Mandates should highlight everything that the organization is required to do as well as those things that are not required.

Then take time to see what was achieved in the past and how it was achieved. This is important as you can get a lot of information from this to plan the organization’s future. Then take time to look into envisioning about the future of the organization. Once you have these things done, it is time to take your strategic plan to a SWOT analysis. This is an important part of strategic plan for non-profit organizations.

Once you know your organization’s Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats (SWOT), you should move to planning. This is where the future envisioning comes into play and you will be able to develop steps to implement your plan for the organization. List all the steps down and give them time frames. This will help you do everything in the right order and you will end up giving priority to important issues. So you end up with goals and objectives along with a time limit to achieve your goals and objectives.

Then put everything coherently on paper in an organized manner and you have a strategic plan for non-profit organizations. Now all that needs to be done is adopt the strategic plan and this will be done only during a board meeting. A point to remember is that a strategic plan for non-profit organizations is all updated on a regular basis depending on the needs and requirement of the organization.
