Most countries require that a person should be a valid driver's license holder for at least two years before getting an international drivers permit. They both have to be carried together in case you would like to drive in the United States. The IDP should be issued in English preferably.
The international driver’s permit is valid only for six months to one year in most cases. After that a person has to apply for a United States driver’s license in order to continue driving. Almost all the 50 states in the United States allow an international drivers permit as an authorized form of driver's license.
The United States government cannot issue an IDP in case you are not a citizen. It has to be obtained from your respective country only. Also, foreigners who wish to get a driver's license in the US can only get it in their respective state. This license is not given to foreigners via the federal government.
Getting an IDP is very easy and it is usually processed in one single day in several countries. It carries the same number as the driver's license and will have a date extension. It will also carry an expiration date on the card for the sake of easy reference.
