If you have to drive a car, then having auto insurance is a must. The costs of auto insurance depend on various factors, including your age and your driving skills for example. If you have ever flouted the traffic laws or violated any of them on the road, then expect to pay a higher insurance amount.

Auto insurance companies have access to all the driver's license records of every individual who apply for insurance. They see people who are involved in traffic violations as high risk category. For them a person with a clean record is the best candidate to insure. However, auto insurance company will not deny insurance plan because of a poor driving record, but they will hike up the charges instead. That is how they make more money out of insurance plans. It is just like handling your credit report.

The insurance surcharges can be pretty high depending on the type of traffic violation that is showing up on your record. For an accident which happened once, the surcharge can be minimal. However, if it was a hit and run case or a reckless driving, then expect the surcharge to be much higher. In some cases it can go up to as much as 80 percent of the cost of your insurance plan. That means you are paying double the amount every month to get insured.

One count of reckless driving stays on your record for at least 11 years, and as long as this stays, the insurance costs will be high only. In case there have been multiple counts, then you will be easily paying twice or thrice the amount for insurance.
