What Is Reckless Driving ?

Several states have strict rules against reckless driving, and if a person is reported, then severe action is taken against the driver. Reckless driving means that a driver is willfully and recklessly handling his vehicle with utmost disrespect for safety of others. In some states in the US, reckless driving is termed as careless or dangerous driving.

There are some rules that are used to define reckless driving in the United States. These are as follows:

  • If you drive more than 25 miles per hour than the posted speed limit on the road, then you can be charged for reckless driving on count of breaking the speed limit.
  • If you are found to be racing with another vehicle without the need and are endangering other vehicles on the road, then it is termed as reckless driving. Anybody who has witnessed this can report the incident as reckless driving to the police.
  • If you do not stop when a police officer asks you to and race away with the car, then you will be booked for a reckless driving incident.
  • If you are on a two lane road and if you overtake another vehicle ahead of you when the visibility ahead is not that clear, then you can be booked for reckless driving.

Every state in the United States takes reckless driving as a serious offense and they penalize the driver very badly. They can serve jail sentence for up to one year and it may result in cancellation or suspension of driver's license. Also, the state awards 6 or more points on the driver's license for reckless driving.
