Speed Limits On Highways

In the United States, each state or territory has its own speed limits, and also sometimes the fines and rules for violation may vary as per the states laws. The speed limits are mainly dependent on the type of land and the usage of it. Five miles per hour is the typical increment used when it comes to increasing the speed limits.

The speed limits in the United States have been increased consistently because the vehicle specifications have been changing, and also some vehicles can go at much higher speeds safely. Also, having stipulated speed limits help to control highway traffic better.

Initially speed limits were only 45 mph, but now the minimum speed limit you find on a highway is 75 mph. In some states, the minimum speed limit itself is 80 mph. The speed limit in the residential areas is likely to be much lower and it may not exceed more than 30 mph. Residential areas have a higher rate of pedestrian traffic and any speed limit higher than 30mph could be dangerous for the people. Also, school and park zones have the least speed limit and some of them may limit the traffic speed to only 10 miles per hour. Especially school zones are treated with extra care. Urban and suburban roads have slightly higher speed limits like 45 to 55 mph.

Highways and freeways have the highest speed limits in any state. The traffic here usually goes on four lane roads and is easier to control. That is why the speed limits are higher.
