What Is A Speed Trap ?

A speed trap is actually equipment that is used to identify vehicles that are violating the speed limits. Speed traps use a stop clock and digital camera to measure the speed limit of the vehicle. It works by calculating the time taken for the vehicle to cross a certain stretch of the road. It may be a very small stretch of the road, but one cannot cross it if they are not maintaining a certain speed limit. So, if you have been speeding even for a short distance where there is a speed trap, then you could be in trouble.

Speed traps generate a lot of income for the traffic department and that is why the police use them liberally. The most ideal places for a speed trap are roads where people are most likely to speed. These could be on mountainous roads, straight roads, wide roads, and less used roads. People think that nobody is watching and that is why they tend to speed. Also, typically where there is a speed trap present, the cops would park their vehicles somewhere close by, so that they can immediately catch the culprit and give him or her a speeding ticket. Even if the cops are not present, the speeding ticket can be sent home because the speed trap can typically identify the license plate.

More than the locals, it is the travelers who get in trouble with speeding tickets. That is because they are not aware of the speed traps located on freeways and usually tend to travel at a high speed.
